January 2007: End of Month Report

In Uncategorized on January 31, 2007 at 8:02 pm

Well the first month of 2007 is almost in the history books. So for the record here is where things stand:
PokerStars: $62 (tough string of straight vs flushes, AA vs two pair and one really nasty flopped boat losing to a rivered gut shot straight flush).
FullTilt: $100 (No Play)
Poker.Com: $120
Louisville Poker League: 70 points, no certificates yet.

Note: Transitioning from a bonus chaser to a winning poker player is a tough prospect. I am learning discipline, aggression and self control a little bit at a time. Bankroll management these days is critical since Neteller shutdown.
Note: Contrary to popular opinion it is not illegal to play poker online. It is however difficult to move money around like back in my bonus chasing days.

Porkrind’s Grind: Poker Post

In Uncategorized on January 30, 2007 at 2:15 pm
Phew!!!!!!!!!
What a week I have had on the felt. I have been rivered so many times I am thinking about buying stock in a canoe company. Playing fixed limit cash games just for points and fun I dropped all of my profits for the month in two sessions. After that beating I decided to just play some sit and goes since I always do well there. Once again I got crushed. Only one win and 4 in the money finishes out of 20 games. The most hilarious thing about that stat is my average finish was 4th. It just seemed that every time I got my money in with the best hand, which is the only thing I am proud of, my opponent always managed to catch me on the river.

Poker Stars: Silver Star VIP Status!!!!!!!!!!!

In Uncategorized on January 28, 2007 at 12:08 pm

For the first time in my online poker career I earned enough points to reach the SILVERSTAR VIP status at PokerStars today. What does that mean?
Well I can get stuff from the store faster because I will earn player points 50% faster and use my tourney bucks for live buy ins if I chose. I can also play in the big freerolls they have. I sure hope they are not the all in donkey fests that the Hubble’s Freerolls have become.
One quick tip about earning FPPs/VPPs at Stars. Play fixed limit $1/2!!!!!!! I can not get deep into the math but at 1/2 you will clear FPPs/VPPs at about 90% the pace of 2/4 and 60% of 3/6. The math is in your favor to multi-table 1/2 and spread your risk-bankroll out rather than one table 2/4-3/6 and have variance kill you in one hand.

On another note last night I played in a 28 player freeroll on my regular site and finished 2nd. I would have won the thing but I ran out of time and had to go to work. I lost patience and starting big stack bullying trying to get it over with as quickly as possible. My opponent was a solid player and I did not have the time to see flops with him. He finally got mad and called with JT sooted and you know what happened………………………………..

Til next time,

Peace Out

Super Pages

In Uncategorized on January 20, 2007 at 6:30 pm
I just discovered this site and I love it. The people pages function allows for reverse phone look ups that at a minimum will tell you the type of phone that called you (Landline or Cell) and the carrier company (Cingular, Verizon, etc…). The White Pages a very complete giving you access to most listed phone numbers. Check it out at www.SuperPages.com

Peace Out

Bankroll: 2007

In Uncategorized on January 20, 2007 at 5:55 pm

I should have posted this at the Beginning of the month but life was a bit hectic. I started the year out on my three sites with $100 each. My focus for the year is low buy in Sit and Go tournaments and a few satellites here and there.

My 2007 results so far:
Poker.com- $100 (Have not really played much there this year beyond freerolls)
Pokerstars- $160 (Variance is a bear there)
Full Tilt- $100 (Have not played a hand there yet this year)
LIVE (free play)- $120 in Gift Certificates.

When you play primarily sit and go tournaments you are going to suffer some serious variance. My most effective tactic is Blind Stealing and controlled post flop aggression. I have finally come to the point to where I hate coin flips. Learning when to back off a pretty hand has saved me many times especially late when the blinds are insane. That is when the gamblers really come out.

Short Stack Bingo Pays Off….

In Uncategorized on January 16, 2007 at 4:05 pm

But not for me.
I have been playing some really great live poker lately. I have made it to Heads Up in 3 out of the last 5 tourneys I have played in the LPT. Had these been buy in tournaments I would be totally ecstatic. However I have no wins which will get me a certificate for the next semi-final. What is worse is the fact that in every one of my heads up matches I have lost massive chip leads to ALL IN or FOLD bingo players. I actually lost a 10,000 to 500 chip lead and lost. How did I do it. My opponent simply went all in in the dark. Every time I had an Ace with a decent kicker. 8 hands in a row he caught his miracle card on the river. Another time I paired my Ace and the my opponent kept calling with 94 off suit and caught runner runner with two pair.

Both of those instances prove the point that any two cards can win. It is just how you play them. Although I went on flaming raging tilt after losing those two heads up matches at least it was free. Also I will never forget those two players and how they play.

Until next time

Poker.com Upgrades

In Uncategorized on January 15, 2007 at 1:54 pm

Poker.com upgrading their software over the weekend and after playing a bit I can say I like the changes.
They now offer just about every poker game imaginable.
Hand Histories are saved to the hard drive.
The interface is much cleaner and less resource intensive
Sidegames are still available: Backgammon and Black Jack
Player to player transfer are now available.

Overall I like the upgrades. I do have issues with the local hand history upgrade but that has to do with the eventual compatibility with Poker Tracking software. I really hate those.

Any way check out version 4 of Poker.com’s software and give the Black Jack game a whirl. Cheaper than on the boat.

YouMail Product review

In Uncategorized on January 12, 2007 at 11:23 pm

YouMail: Product Review www.youmail.com

Background: For months I was receiving harassing phone calls and voicemails from an unknown person. I tried everything I could to ignore the problem, even hired a Private Investigator to look into it things were getting so bad, until I recently discovered my voicemail account with Cingular had been compromised. A friend of mine received a forwarded voicemail supposedly from me at 4am one morning. I was not awake and this really confused me. Since this person elected to no longer remain my friend I was ticked off. I searched forums, googled voicemail hacking, bugged Cingular, etc.. in order to find out what was going on. My research taught me that Cingular’s voicemail system is probably the most unsecure system out there. Sprint/Nextel users voicemail accounts are tied directly to thier phones ESN (serial number) and passwords are enabled by default. Cingular however ties its voicemail to Caller ID and you have to enable voicemail passwords in the system yourself. My mistake was that I enabled the password protection on my phone but not the voicemail system.

VoiceMail Hacking
My voicemail had been hacked and this is how they probably did it. Have you ever called lets say Best Buy at 1-800-BESTBUY? That number is 1-800-237-8289. Now Best Buy pays the phone company a lot of money to be able to use that particular number and they want everyone to use it when they call a customer service center. Now Best Buy probably has 2000 or so phones in their customer service department and they all can’t have the same number. So the phone company sells a service called “Trunking” which routes all calls to 1-800-BESTBUY to those 2000 numbers. Follow me so far?

Every customer service phone line has its own number but Best Buy is paying for you to call that one number. It is easier on everyone. Now when anyone from one of those 2000 customer service number calls out to you have you ever noticed that the caller id always says 1-800-237-8289 and not the private number to that line the rep has to give you that personally. Well part of trunking is that Best Buy has bought the ability to run out going calls through a switchboard that assigns a caller id to the out going call. So Best Buy can make their number appear regardless of what number is really calling. Seems reasonable they pay alot of advertising dollars to drive that number into your head. Most government and 911 systems work the same way. Try it out.

Well here is the flip side of “Trunking”. Debt Collectors, Salesmen, Private Investigators, etc… anyone who wants to confuse you with the money to pay the huge cost of trunking can manipulate their Caller ID. Cingular’s security hole allows the the Debt Collector lets say to not only get you to answer the phone because you think it is work or mom calling. If you have not enabled the voicemail password protection on your voicemail account and they call you using your own number as the caller id then they are in regardless of the password. I asked the Cingular Tech Support about this today and they swore it was impossible. If you go to www.howardforums.com you will quickly see it is.

The Solution
Youmail is a free web based voicemail service that I am absolutely in love with. It offers secure voicemail, voicemail archiving, personalized greetings, call rejection services and what is really nice it will send a copy of your voicemail messages marked with sender/date/time to your own email account and send you a text message as well. Set up is very easy with incredibly simply step by step instructions that even I could follow.

Secure Voicemail: The service is web based so your password is off of the Cell service that you presently use and can be much more intricate than the pure number based ones on most providers.

Voicemail Archiving: Youmail will save your voicemails forever. Unlike the $6 a month enhanced service that Cingular offers which only saves voicemails for a maximum of 21 days. The best part of this feature is you have the option of having a name/number/date/time stamped copy of your voicemails sent to your own email account which can be kept forever. Best of all the date/time/number stamp adds serious evidencuary value in a court case.

Personalized Greetings: Youmail allows you to record a personal greeting to each individual who calls you. So when your mom calls she can hear “Hi Mom, I can not answer right now I will call you back. Leave a message” instead of the generic greetings we all record or the dead air I recorded on mine to keep my number from going out. Be prepared for the people you know to freak out when your voicemail calls them by name. Also you can put your favorite schools fight song as their personal greeting if they are fans of another school.

Call Rejection: Youmail offers the option to “Ditch” calls. Essentially if your ex is calling and harassing you there is an option to reject any voicemails from that number and the service simply hangs up on them.

Voicemail Notification: In the set up process you have an option to have Youmail send your phone a text message whenever you get a voicemail.

Set Up: You mail has a simple but somewhat lengthy process to set up your new voicemail box. Essentially the service switches the number your phone calls to check voicemail to another number that is off of the Cingular system. The service recognizes your number from your phones serial number and not caller id which is something cingular should have implemented years ago. The instructions are simply written and easy to follow with video tutorials.

Drawbacks:
You will not be able to check your voicemail from someone elses phone but the emailed copies and added security are worth it to me these days.
Also the number Youmail uses to check your voicemail is long distance so make sure you have a Nationwide Free Long Distance plan for your cell phone.
You will have to change the speed dial key on your phone to the number Youmail gives you. I my case I press and hold down the number 1 to check my cingular voicemail and use the number 4 to check my Youmail.
The online system you can log into to check your messages from the internet is Java based and requires you to download and install the latest version on your computer. So if your work computer network is like mine and does not allow you to download and install programs you won’t be able to use youmail at work. So just use your personal account from home instead.

Overall I find Youmail to be an excellent free service which is hands down better than the pay services I have tried. I highly recommend any Cingular customer or victim of harassing phone calls to switch.

Free Play Poker: What I have learned.

In Uncategorized on January 12, 2007 at 10:28 am

Here in Louisville there are two different free play poker leagues (live) that offer as the big prize to the yearly winner a seat in the WSOP. The LPT and the NPT.

Now don’t consider a live free play league as a waste of time. Imagine trying to win a freeroll WSOP seat on Pokerstars. You will have to straight win at least three huge 10,000 player bingo freerolls to get to the finals. In the LPT for example you have to win a nightly tournament against only 60 players max to advance to the quarter finals. Where you have to finish in the top 100 of 300 players max to advance to the finals. In the finals you are only up against 300 players for the WSOP and it is a freeroll people. Plus along the way you can win gift certificates, invites to special tournaments and meet some really great people. Just based on pure math your odds and ROI expectations are significantly better in the LPT than online anyday.
Here is a quick review of both:

The first is the Nationwide Poker Tour and from my experiences with them don’t ever play with them. The dealers play in the tourneys with the players and rules are changed dramatically based on the mood of the dealer and requests of the Host (usually a bar). I suggest you avoid this league at all costs even if every online site in the world is shut down and you are dying to play poker on a dark and stormy night. I would rather play gin with my grandma than waste another night with this league.

The second, and my favorite is the Louisville Poker Tour. The dealers are professional and courteous. The players are all very nice and the prizes are great for a free poker league. They offer games all over town every day of the week and the competition is great. I usually final table and have been one of the consistent point earners since starting with them. The owner of the LPT is a very nice and attractive lady named Jeniifer.

Now several bars offer thier own games and prizes but the city wide leagues are usually the best and most attractive options especially when you consider the WSOP seats that are up for grabs.

Now lots of people consider these free play poker leagues a joke and do not take them seriously preferring to play over at Caesars or online. However I think mixing up some free live play with my online play a real learning experience. I have started to pick up tells, reads and gut feelings. Add to that the knowledge I pick up playing against some really tough and consistent players you can not beat the lessons it has taught me. I have learned to really read the board, aggression pays and most importantly when to back off of a pretty hand. I have also learned the screen names of some major donks and added them to my buddy lists….

Here is another advantage to playing in the LPT. Since everyone is so nice and I can always count on people I know being there it is a great night out on the town with my wife. We call it our “Bowling League”.

If you live in an area that offers free play poker leagues I strongly suggest you start playing. If you live in Louisville Kentucky I highly suggest The LPT over the Nationwide games. For more information click the LPT link under Local Poker Links.
I hope to see you around.

Peace out.
