Thanks to movies and TV shows we are all lead to believe that cell phones are easily traced. We seem to believe that all the police have to do is call the cell phone company and viola the location of a missing person. Check out this article from Urban Legends for a complete description of how hard it is to actually trace or track a cell phone.

Time Ticking Down for Gov to Implement UIGEA Rules
In Poker on June 24, 2007 at 3:02 amTime Ticking Down for Gov to Implement UIGEA Rules
270 Days Will Be Up July 10, 2007
Since the first online casino opened its virtual doors about 12 years ago, certain members of Congress have unsuccessfully tried to pass legislation aimed at prohibiting online gaming. No matter how powerful or influential, no Congressman was able to successfully persuade Congress to pass anti-gaming legislation. After many years of failed efforts, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) was finally snuck through Congress in late 2006. As we all now know, the bill does not make online poker illegal nor does the bill change gaming law. What it does is to make it more difficult to get money into a site by forbidding U.S. financial Institutions from funding the type of online gambling that the law has previously made illegal.

In Uncategorized on June 19, 2007 at 1:51 amBloody Heroes is now in paperback. If you want to read the back story to what happened during the earliest days of the war in Afghanistan this is the book to read. I have met most of the players one way or the other over the last few years and their story is chilling but true. Largely ignored by the US media this is a story of an amazing struggle for survival by a handful of British SAS and an American Navy SEAL against unbelievable odds. I remember watching this battle on CNN and thinking how could anyone survive that bombardment.
I don’t want to spoil the book or the ending but this is a great read.

Ugly Beats
In Poker on June 10, 2007 at 2:19 pm
Everyone has a ugly beat story to tell.
My most recent ugly beat came (repeatedly) at the poker tables of a local fund raiser for the South Oldham Little League. As it was a fund raiser with a very liberal rebuy policy, I knew it would be a madhouse and had mentally prepared myself for the insanity. Fortunately I was playing with winnings and set my rebuy limit to once. I had brought my A-game and was ready to finish in the money. I was seated at a table that included several local friends and acquaintances which was nice.
One of the guys at my table was a very nice guy who’s son I had coached. He had absolutely no poker skills or knowledge as demonstrated by his inability to bet in turn, or understand what cards he was holding. He made every classic mistake you can think a new player could make. He chased hands, bet wildly on impossible hands and had to be coached several times by players at the table with regards to what the ranking of his hand was and why he either won or lost a hand. As this was a friendly tournament that included several friends and neighbors, his fumbling at the tables was generally tolerated and seasoned players helped coach him despite the aggravation.
Now mind you, I have no problem being beat by a better player…. but being beat by someone who has no idea whatsoever is infuriating. It seemed that everytime I went in on a big hand he was there like a bad penny. What was worse is that he had the most unbelievable luck of all to catch the most impossible hands. For example, I would be setting on two pair AA & JJ with a flop of AJ3 and would be betting the hell out of it. He would follow right along with 73 in his pocket and manage to pull out a third 7 on the river. Of course we had to explain to him that three of a kind beats two pair before he finished pushing his stacks my way….sigh. It was almost as if he could call whatever card he wanted on the river and would get it.
Lady luck was massaging his shoulders during the entire tourney. No matter what it was, he got it. I would have a flush off the flop and bet it by the book and he would hit a full boat on the river. It was a nightmare until a table move that separated us. At my new table I was able to recoup my losses and get back into form. Needless to say this lasted about 30 minutes till another table move put us back together and it was a rerun of previous frustration. One ugly beat is rough, but repeated ugly beats by the same player is unbelievable! It still gnaws at me when I think of it. The only sweat revenge is that he did not end up in the money after the final bad beat from him put me out.
Let’s face it, ugly beats sometimes happen to everyone at the poker table. A recent event in our community has given me a better perspective on ugly beats that makes it a little easier to tolerate a bad showing at the poker tables. The Wakefield family has been a part of our community for as long as I can remember. I grew up with the Wakefield boys, played football together, and continue to see them at the ballpark or school as we now enjoy our kid’s turn at the joys of youth.
Recently, Tim Wakefield’s son Justin was involved in a very serious automobile accident that has rocked his family. He was seriously injured and is currently in a medically-induced coma due to injuries to his head from the accident. Justin is a kind and talented kid who should be graduating now and moving on to college and the excitement of young adulthood. Unfortunately, life has dealt Justin with an ugly beat at the Poker table of life. Bottom line, ugly beats are basically when bad things happen to good people either at the poker table or in life. When I think of what has happened to Justin and his family, losing a poker game means very little. The thing I try to remember now is that life is not fair and bad beats will come your way at the poker table and in life. The key is what we do after getting that ugly beat. Do I let it keep me down, or do I move on and keep a positive outlook. I would prefer to be the optimist. Remember to keep Justin and his family in your prayers.

Smooth Calling or Jamming?
In Poker on June 9, 2007 at 6:23 pm
Here is a great little tip on when you should “Slow Play or Jam”. One thing about this tactic though is when your opponent comes back at you usually you are beat and the pot is going to cost you.
