Your Calendar on the Desktop: Freeware Download

In Uncategorized on July 31, 2007 at 4:48 pm

Here is a quick write up and link to an awesome program for Outlook Users. I used to have a similar program years ago and missed being able to see my calendar on my desktop. I highly recommend this one.

Windows only: Freeware app Outlook on the Desktop embeds the Outlook calendar directly into your desktop. Outlook on the Desktop creates a semi transparent layer that pins the Outlook Calendar on the desktop at all times. The premise is to mimic the real life paper calendaring system — you know the really big calendar you used to keep on your desk. Also, since it uses Outlook, you have full access to all of Outlook’s functionality. Outlook on the Desktop requires .NET 2.0. If you do not have it installed, the program’s setup will install it for you. Outlook on the Desktop is a free download for Windows only.

The USA insults the WTO over online gaming

In Poker on July 31, 2007 at 3:37 am

Here are a couple of short articles that go into some detail explaining how the US ban on online gaming is going to hurt us in the long run. Banning online gaming over moral issues just might cost the music/dvd recording industry a virtual fortune.
Read em here:
WTO demands USA comply with rulings over online gaming.
Net gamling still illegal in USA but may cost the RIAA

I have never been a fan of the WTO and all its associated civil disobedience but removing USA copyright and patent protections for affected countries just might be the straw that breaks the UIGEA.

What do you think?

So you want to be an Online Poker Pro? The real story

In Poker on July 29, 2007 at 9:35 pm

I have heard the phrase “Online Poker Pro” tossed about over the years like it is one of the easiest things to do. You hear about these kids betting and checkraising thier way to fame, fortune and Poker Babes. I played around with the idea myself once awhile back. But after studying the game and becoming what I consider an above average player I have come to the conclusion that making any sort of living playing poker online as a pure poker player is darned near imposssible.

There are several reasons first of which is a little thing called variance. Variance is a cruel bitch delivering one and two outers on the River when your whole bankroll is depleted. Variance will put you at a table with two Call Stations that will see any flop with any two and smooth call you all the way down with bottom pair. Variance will have your girlfriend want to ‘Talk’ smack dab in the middle of the Sunday Million on PokerStars. Variance can cause the US government to suddenly make all the online donkeys afraid to play and deposit anymore. Overall Variance is enough to drive most people away.

How do the big name players overcome the Variance Monster? Easy….
RakeBack
Bonus Chasing
Stakers and Backers
Skill

Those are just starters. I plan to write a few posts and full blown articles on who is really making money playing poker online on these topics. But for now just drop by the Sharkscope or the OPR and do a search on your favorite online tournament players. These sites track 90% of the tourneys on the larger sites. One source at the scope FAQs points out the 80% of online players are lifetime losers. I looked up the top ranked players on OPR and out of 100 big winners only 10 or so showed any long term profits.

I will get into lots more detail in future posts but my point is clear. Poker is a game, the sites are not rigged, have a reasonable set of expectations regarding your abilities as a player and you should just have fun. Personally I play to win the tournament which is why I love Carbon/Poker.com and those cool accolades.

Until next time remember it is just a game, never bet the house payment and have fun.

Wine vs Water: A simple question

In Uncategorized on July 27, 2007 at 7:01 am

In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstratedthat if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we wouldhave absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli) bacteriafoundin feces.
In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of Poop. However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine (or rum, whiskey orother liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process ofboiling, filtering and/or fermenting.

Remember: Water = Poop, Wine = Health

Therefore, it’s better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink waterand be full of shit.

There is no need to thank me for this valuable information I’m doing it as a public service.

Just when I thought I was done with online poker along comes a really great deal from PokerStars.
Since depositing at Pokerstars is so hard anymore (I had to cash out most of my loot a couple of months ago) I thought I was done playing there. However they started these 70 Frequent Player Point Single Table Tournaments for tickets into the Sunday $100,000 Tournament. The winner gets a seat in the big tournament but best of all if you already have a seat for that week then they credit you with $11 in Tourney Dollars. I have already converted about 1000 player points into just over $100 not near the bankroll I used to have there but enough to keep me donking away for awhile.

Soooooo,,,, the old porker looks at his 4800 player points (I was saving up for a nice deck of cards that cost about 8000 points) and decides to play a couple. Now these things are pure donkfests and if you are any sort of poker player at all you should win one or two a week. Be warned I suffered through an amazing run of incredibly frustrating second and third place finishes not to mention a few donkey moments of my own. Just play them like rebuys and you should be ok anything worth calling you might as well push.

Last thing I am trying to set up a league over at my other favorite site. One night a week with a minimum buy in of $1 or so with a different game or format every week. I will add a small cash prize to the overall winner. If interested email me at rob@teamdcg.com

Flower Bribes

In Uncategorized on July 15, 2007 at 5:41 am

One Friday, two women were sitting and talking. One woman looked up and saw her husband coming down the street with a bunch of flowers in his hand.
She rolled her eyes and said, “There comes the a**hole with flowers in his hand. Now he’ll expect me to spend the weekend on my back with my legs in the air.”

Her friend promptly replied, “Don’t you have a vase?”

Nigerian Spam: The 419 Wars

In Uncategorized on July 15, 2007 at 4:40 am

Next time you check your email I am sure you will get a message from some foreign sounding person wanting to give you millions of dollars. Most rational adults are quick to realize exactly what it is SPAM. We know they are lying, we will never get paid and if we are stupid enough to participate then we can kiss our bank accounts goodbye. However just enough people actually fall for these scams that a few websites are devoted to scamming the spammers. There are two links below to an excellent resource for combating spam scams and one of them has some hilarious anti-scamspam tactics.

Fired from an ordinary 12-gauge shotgun, the Taser XREP projectile delivers a wireless electric shock from over 100 feet away. The stun bullet’s Neuro-Muscular Incapacitation disables targets just like wired Taser weapons.

Summer Champs 2007

In Poker on July 11, 2007 at 5:18 am

CarbonPoker and Poker.Com is hosting the Summer Champs series.

As a player in the old Blogger Poker Tour I learned more about consistent play and patience than I had in 2 years worth of online play. I had never played in a points based league and found I really enjoyed it. Add to that the fact that my wife and I both earned seats in the finals for a WSOP seat last year the BPT proved to be a huge success for Poker.com.

Now that Poker.com has evolved into CarbonPoker Shane has taken all of the player feedback from the BPT and created the Summer Champs Series. This time around we are playing buy in tournaments in almost every common form of tournament poker. There are 34 events over 34 days making anyone really wanting to compete for the Grand Prize a true Ironman of Poker. Since points are based on finish positions in each event multiplied by a difficulty rating and there are no satellites to any of the high buy in events play is genuinely tough. The SC Leaderboard has some truly great players. The current top ten are listed below:
1. Fabrab
2. RobinBos
3. Ghostofachance
4. JamesScou
5. Jester3
6. Mada1970
7. HypnoTrader
8. DavidCuz
9. PJesus
10. FoldMonkey

Due to personal and bankroll considerations I have only played in a few events but my points average would have clearly put me in the running for the Grand Prize Tourney. Next year I plan on being fully funded and completely focused on the game. As the successor to the Blogger Poker Tour I am going to give Shane two thumbs up and a snap twist for the quality of the CarbonPoker Summer Champs 2007.

If you want to try out CarbonPoker click on one of the links to the right. They are offering:
First Deposit Bonus: 100FIRST1K for a 100% bonus up to $200, 14 days of $500 freerolls, and a coupon for entry into a $1000 Freeroll.

Reload Bonus: RELOADJULY for 100% back on deposits up to $150.

Peace Out and Good Luck

Free Roll Madness and a player report from the WSOP

In Poker on July 8, 2007 at 10:56 pm

Getting away from real money poker takes some serious adjustments to your game. Usually patience pays off when all the other donkeys knock themselves out and all you have to do is chip away at the lead donkstack. However the beats are horrendous. The major problem I have as a freeroller now is when I do win a seat for a good high buy in MTT. Since I don’t see these players much I have no idea how they play. So my chips become intelligence gathering tools. Not really a good way to head into an MTT just blindly betting hoping they fold or missed.
The other problem is not really with quality of play but with the tightness. Most of the online big buy in MTTs are fead by satellites. Most of the players know they got lucky and are just hoping to cash. So you end up with some of the tightest bubble play I have ever seen in my life. I keep crashing on the bubble. It pisses me off when I, as the tightest player on the table, push with decent cards on the bubble only to be called by one of these freeroll bingo players who catches his/her miracle two outer on the river.
Which brings me to the article below from Alvin. He is a Part-Time Pro who lives the traveling MTT life. He wrote a nice piece on his attitude towards large field MTTs and how to be successful. Enjoy the read.

I work in a high pressure, high stress occupation…

In Uncategorized on July 2, 2007 at 6:47 pm

I work in a high pressure, high stress occupation.

I make no secret that the last year has been horrible on me. I spun my wheels trying to figure out what happened to my life and how I got there with very little success. I spent a small fortune on Dr. Phil books and beat myself senseless. My world was spinning out of control and no matter what I tried it only got worse. The more I smiled and faked it the harder people came at me. To be honest all I wanted to do was just quit and hide in a hole. Circumstances in my life and bad karma just would not let me do that. I knew what happened, when it happened, who did it, how they did it, etc but I did not know the most important answer of all “Why did this happen and why me?”. Now that I have the answers to questions I have had all along I am able to let go of things, forgive and understand where to go from here. This book was worth the 20 bucks.
